Privacy Policy

What we know about you, in the order you would ask. The short answer is that your recordings are not part of it.

In effect from

The short version

  • Your recordings never reach us. Capture, editing and export all happen on your Mac, and there is no server here that could receive a frame of video.
  • We hold an account, not your footage: an email address, an optional name, which plan you are on and which Macs you have signed in on.
  • We do not sell or rent your information, and there is no advertising network in the app or on this site.
  • Paddle takes the payment as merchant of record. Card numbers never reach the app or our servers.
  • Ask us to delete your account at [email protected] and we will.

A summary is not the agreement. The sections below are what you are agreeing to.

Who this covers

ReScreen is operated as a sole proprietorship based in India. The proprietor’s registered name and postal address are available on request from [email protected]. In data-protection terms we are the controller of the information described below, and we decide why it is held.

This policy covers three things:

  • the ReScreen application for macOS,
  • this website, and
  • the account service the app signs in to.

It does not cover sites we link to. When you follow a link to Paddle, to Apple or to anywhere else, that company's own policy applies to what you do there.

Your recordings are not ours

ReScreen records to your own disk. Projects are ordinary folders on your Mac — inside your Movies folder unless you choose somewhere else — and the video, the audio and the project file stay there until you move or delete them.

We do not receive any of it. No frame, no screenshot, no audio track and no project file is uploaded to us, at any point, for any reason. There is no cloud rendering step, no "processing" server and no opt-out to hunt for, because there is nothing to opt out of.

macOS asks you for Screen Recording, and optionally for Camera, Microphone and Input Monitoring. Those permissions are granted to the app on your Mac and are used only to produce the file you asked for. Clicks picked up for automatic zoom are used to build the zooms in your own timeline and are written into your own project.

The one exception is the one you make yourself: if you attach a recording to a support email, we have it because you sent it, and we delete it when the conversation is finished.

What your account stores

Recording is a paid product, so there is an account behind it. It holds:

  • Your email address. It signs you in and receives verification codes, receipts and anything you ask us about.
  • Your name, if you give one. It is optional and only used to address you properly.
  • A one-way hash of your password. Never the password itself — we cannot read it, and neither can anyone who obtains the database.
  • Which plan you bought, its status, and when it renews or ends.
  • A reference to your customer record at Paddle, so a payment can be matched to the right account.
  • The Macs you have signed in on. For each one: the name macOS already gives the machine, and an identifier the app derives on the Mac itself and hashes before sending. We can tell your Macs apart; we never hold a hardware serial number.
  • The date you last used the app, which is what tells us an account is dormant.

That is the whole list. There is no field for your location, your employer, your other software or anything that was on your screen.

What this website collects

This site uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits: which pages were read, roughly which country the reader was in, which browser and device they used, and which link or search brought them here. It sets Google's own cookies to do that.

We do not run advertising, remarketing or cross-site tracking, and we do not build a profile of you. The analytics tag is on this website only — it is not in the application.

You can refuse it. Blocking cookies in your browser, using a content blocker, or installing Google's opt-out add-on all stop the reporting, and none of them change how this site works.

Our web and API servers also keep ordinary access logs — the request, the time, the address it came from and the browser that sent it. They exist to keep the service up and to spot abuse, and they are kept for a short period and then discarded.

When you write to us

Email us and we keep the thread, so that the next person who picks it up can read what was already said.

The app also has a feedback form. When you use it we receive your message, the category you chose, a rating if you gave one, your email address if you are signed in or typed one, and two technical details: the version of the app and the version of macOS you are running. Those two are there so a bug report can be reproduced on the right system.

No recording, screenshot, project file or filename is attached to feedback.

Payments

Checkout is handled by Paddle, which acts as the merchant of record for every ReScreen purchase. Paddle sells you the licence, collects the payment, charges the right tax for where you are, and issues the invoice.

That means Paddle collects your payment details and billing information under its own privacy notice. We never see a full card number, and no card data passes through the app or this site.

What we receive back from Paddle is what we need to unlock the app: which plan was bought, whether it is active, a customer and transaction reference, and the email address used at checkout.

Who else processes your data

We keep this list short on purpose. Every company here is a processor acting on our instructions, except Paddle, which is a merchant in its own right.

We do not sell or rent personal information, we do not share it for advertising, and we do not hand it to anyone else unless the law requires it — in which case we tell you, unless we are forbidden from doing so.

Why we are allowed to hold it

Where the GDPR or a similar law applies, these are our lawful bases:

  • Performing our contract with you — the account, the plan, the Macs you use it on, and the receipts.
  • Our legitimate interests — keeping the service secure, preventing fraud and abuse, and improving the product from the feedback people send.
  • Your consent — analytics cookies on this website, where consent is required. You can withdraw it at any time by blocking them.
  • A legal obligation — tax and accounting records for a purchase.

How long we keep it

  • Account data: while the account exists. Ask us to delete it and we remove it, along with the record of the Macs you signed in on.
  • Billing records: for as long as tax law requires us to keep proof of a sale. Most of that record sits with Paddle, which issued the invoice.
  • Feedback: while it is still useful to the product. Ask us and we will remove yours or strip your address from it.
  • Support email: while the conversation is open, and for a reasonable period afterwards in case you come back to it.
  • Website analytics: by Google, under the retention setting on the property — at most 14 months for user-level data.
  • Server logs: a short window, then discarded.

Your rights, and how to use them

Wherever you are, you can ask us to:

  • tell you what we hold about you and give you a copy,
  • correct anything that is wrong,
  • delete your account and the data behind it,
  • export your data in a portable form,
  • stop or restrict a particular use, or
  • withdraw a consent you gave.

Write to [email protected] from the address on the account — that is how we know the request is yours — and we will answer within 30 days. We do not charge for it, and asking never affects your plan.

If you are in the EU or the UK

You have the rights above under the GDPR, and you can complain to your national data protection authority if you think we have handled your data badly. We would rather you told us first, but it is your right either way.

If you are in India

The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 gives you rights of access, correction, erasure and grievance redressal. [email protected] is also our grievance channel; if you are not satisfied with our answer you may escalate to the Data Protection Board of India.

If you are in California

We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. You can ask what we collect, ask for it to be deleted, and exercise those rights without being charged a different price or given a worse product.

How it is protected

Passwords are stored only as bcrypt hashes. Sign-in codes are stored as hashes too, expire on their own and give up after a few wrong attempts. Everything between the app, this site and our servers travels over TLS. Payment details never reach us at all.

The Security page describes the rest of it in detail.

Children

ReScreen is a professional tool and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly create accounts for children — under 16 in the EEA and the UK, and under 18 in India, where a child's data requires verifiable parental consent.

If you believe a child has an account with us, write to [email protected] and we will remove it.

Where your data is processed

We are based in India, and the providers listed above run services in other countries, including in the European Union and the United States. Your account data may therefore be processed outside the country you live in.

Where a transfer out of the EEA or the UK needs a safeguard, we rely on providers that offer one — standard contractual clauses or an equivalent mechanism.

Changes to this policy

The date at the top of this page is the date this version took effect. If we change something that materially affects you, we will say so by email to the address on your account, or in the app, before the change applies.

Older versions are available on request.
