Screen recording

Record your screen — exactly the part that matters

A display, a single window, one application, or a region you draw — at the pixel density the screen actually has.

The problem

The recorder you already have gives you a whole screen with your notifications in it, or a region you cannot resize once the countdown has started. Then something stalls, and forty minutes of work opens as a file nothing will play.

What happens instead

Choose a display, window, application or a region you can redraw, resize and type exact dimensions into. The take is saved continuously while you record, so an interrupted take is still a recording.

In detail

What screen recording actually does

Retina, not upscaled

Capture runs at the display’s real resolution. Nothing is stretched to manufacture a 4K number that was never there.

Your recorder is not in the shot

Recorder windows are excluded by the capture filter, and desktop icons can be hidden before the countdown begins.

Pause without ending the take

Pause and resume from the floating toolbar, the menu bar or ⌥⌘P. The pause is cut cleanly out of the take.

Crash-safe by construction

The recording is saved as it happens and free disk space is checked before and during the take, so a crash or a power cut does not cost you the work.

FAQ

Questions about screen recording

Can I record one application and nothing else?

Yes. Sources include a single application as well as a display, a window or a region you draw, so a second monitor full of Slack never appears in the take.

What happens if my Mac gives up mid-recording?

The recording is saved continuously rather than at the end, so the next time you open the app it offers to recover the take up to the moment it was interrupted.
