4K 60 FPS Screen Recording on Mac: Resolution, Codecs and Quality Explained

Blurry text and choppy scrolling come from the wrong settings, not the wrong Mac. Here is what resolution, frame rate, codec and quality actually do.

You record a tutorial on a sharp Retina display, upload it, and the text in your own video is soft. Or the scrolling judders. Or a ten-minute take is so large that uploading it becomes the afternoon's main task. Most advice about 4K 60 FPS screen recording on Mac amounts to "turn everything up", which fixes one of those problems by making another worse. The settings are not complicated once you know what each one is for.

Why do screen recordings look soft?

Screen content is harsher on video compression than camera footage. It is made of one-pixel lines, small text and flat colour, and any scaling or starved bitrate shows up immediately as fuzzy edges.

Three things usually go wrong:

  • Capturing below the display's real resolution. Some tools record a Retina screen at its "looks like" size, half the actual pixels in each direction, and the text never recovers.
  • Upscaling to hit a number. Stretching a smaller capture up to 3840 × 2160 adds pixels, not detail. The label says 4K; the text says otherwise.
  • Too little bitrate for the frame size. A 4K frame squeezed into a bitrate meant for 1080p smears during every scroll.

Retina capture that is never upscaled

Those options are ceilings, not targets. A larger source is scaled down proportionally; a smaller one is left alone. Choose 4K on a MacBook display with fewer than 2160 pixels of height and you get that display's true resolution, not a stretched one.

When you need a genuine 3840 × 2160 frame, record a display that has those pixels, or draw a region using the 4K preset or exact dimensions.

Does 60 FPS matter for a screen recording?

It depends on what moves.

Choose 60 FPS when the video is about motion: scrolling long pages, dragging elements, interface animations, design tools, games, or a product demo where smoothness is part of the impression. Smart Zoom's pans and the smoothed cursor also look more fluid at 60.

Choose 30 FPS when the content is mostly static: slides, code, forms, settings screens, a narrated walkthrough. Thirty frames is plenty, and the file is smaller, which matters for a course with dozens of lessons.

Frame rate is set for recording and again for export. Exporting a 30 FPS capture at 60 does not invent the missing motion, so decide before you record. The built-in "Product Demo" recording preset is set to 4K at 60 FPS for this reason, while "Course Recording" uses 1080p.

Recording defaults to HEVC, because a long take at high resolution is where file size hurts. Export defaults to H.264 in an MP4, because the person receiving your video should never have to think about codecs. Both can be changed, and export can write MOV instead.

Why ReScreen sometimes changes the codec for you

A live recording cannot wait for a slow encoder; frames that cannot be compressed in time are dropped. So ReScreen asks the system whether the hardware encoder can handle your codec at your capture size.

On Apple silicon, H.264 is hardware-encoded only up to 4096 × 2304. A 5K display at native resolution is larger than that. Rather than fall back to the CPU and risk a stuttering take, ReScreen switches that recording to HEVC and tells you why.

Which export quality level should you use?

Export offers four levels. Each one sets a bitrate that scales with the frame size and frame rate, so "High" at 4K 60 is automatically a much bigger budget than "High" at 1080p 30.

  • "Smaller File": for email attachments and chat uploads with size limits. Fine text may soften during fast motion.
  • "Balanced": a good fit for documentation, support answers and long course lessons.
  • "High": the default, and what the social and YouTube presets use. Right for almost anything public.
  • "Maximum": more than four times the bitrate of "Smaller File". Use it for a master copy, or when a platform will re-compress your upload.

Export at Native or at the capture's resolution where possible. Exporting above what you recorded makes a bigger file, not a sharper one.

What should you actually choose?

  • Product demo or landing-page hero: record 4K or Native at 60 FPS, export H.264 at "High" or "Maximum". The guide to product demo videos that convert covers the rest of the craft.
  • YouTube tutorial: 1440p or 4K at 30 FPS; 60 if you scroll a lot.
  • Course lessons: 1080p at 30 FPS keeps a large library manageable.
  • Bug reports and quick internal clips: 1080p, 30 FPS, and skip export entirely. The instant MP4 written when you stop is a straight copy of the capture, so it is exactly as sharp as your recording settings.

Will high settings put the recording at risk?
