A demo script is not a speech. It is a list of beats, each tied to something that happens on screen, and its job is to stop you saying "um" while you search for the next menu. This guide gives you a five-part structure, a fill-in template and a worked example for a made-up product, so you can see how a script becomes a take.
What are the five parts of a demo script?
Every software demo that holds attention follows the same shape, whatever the product.
- Hook (5 to 10 seconds). The viewer's problem, in their words, and what they will see.
- Setup (5 to 10 seconds). Where you are starting: which screen, which account, what the situation is.
- Steps (the body). One task, in the order the viewer would do it, with the reason for each click.
- Result (5 to 10 seconds). The outcome on screen, left long enough to read.
- Next step (5 seconds). One action: start, book, open the settings.
If a part is missing, the viewer feels it. No hook and they do not know why they are watching; no result and they do not know whether it worked.
What does the fill-in template look like?
Copy this into a document and complete each line in one sentence.
- Audience: who is this for, and what is their situation?
- Outcome: after watching, they will be able to ___.
- Hook: "If you ___, here is how ___ in ___."
- Starting point: we begin in ___, signed in as ___.
- Step 1: click ___, because ___.
- Step 2: click ___, because ___.
- Step 3: click ___, because ___.
- Result: the screen now shows ___, which means ___.
- Next step: to do this yourself, ___.
Three steps is a good target. If you have eight, the demo is two demos.
What does a worked example look like?
Here is the template filled in for an imaginary invoicing product, so you can see the level of detail. The product and the numbers are made up.
Audience: freelancers who chase late invoices by hand. Outcome: set up an automatic reminder that sends itself.
Hook. "If you spend Friday afternoons chasing late invoices, here is how to make the reminders send themselves, in under a minute."
Setup. "I'm in the invoices list, and these three are overdue."
Step 1. "I open the first one and choose Reminders, because this is where a schedule lives."
Step 2. "I add a reminder three days after the due date, and a second one a week later. I leave the wording as it is, because it already reads politely."
Step 3. "I save, and I switch it on for every overdue invoice, so I do not have to repeat this."
Result. "The list now shows a small bell on each one, and the first reminder is scheduled for Monday."
Next step. "To set this up on your own account, open Settings, then Reminders."
That is about 125 spoken words, which at a natural pace runs under a minute. Add a real screen, and it is the right size for a feature clip.
How should a launch video script differ?
A SaaS launch video has the same bones but changes the hook and the result. The hook names what is new and who it is for: "Today we are shipping ___, for teams who ___." The steps become a short tour of the new capability rather than a task completed. The result is the reason it matters, and the next step is "try it" or "read the announcement". Keep it to the one new thing. How to make a SaaS launch video from a screen recording covers the production side.
How do you turn the script into a take?
- Walk through the product once with no recording, reading the beats aloud. Fix any step where you hesitate.
- Prepare the data so every click lands on something sensible.
- Record the beats in order, pausing between them. Paused time is cut out of the take, so a stumble in step three costs you a repeated sentence and a cut, not the hook.
- Let the app build the zooms, then delete any that miss.
- Cut and tidy, and watch it back at the size it will be seen.
In ReScreen the Product Demo preset records at 4K and 60 FPS, and the zooms are built from your clicks, so the script only has to carry the words. How to record a software demo is the full recording walkthrough.
What about demo presentations and slides?
Demo presentation examples usually mix slides with the live product, and the same rule applies to a software demo presentation: keep the slides to the setup and the close, and spend the middle in the real product. Slides that explain what the product does before showing it are the part viewers skip. If you are presenting live rather than recording, SaaS demo best practices covers the formats and the mistakes.
What does a marketing video script example look like?
A marketing video script has the same five parts as a demo script, with a bolder hook and a shorter body. Example: hook, "Stop copying the same reply"; show, three clicks; payoff, "the reply sends itself"; next step, "turn it on in Settings". The example fits in under twenty seconds, which is what a marketing video on a feed needs.
What are common script mistakes?
- Writing a paragraph per step. If the sentence is long, the click will be late.
- Describing instead of showing. "This screen lets you manage reminders" tells; clicking it and doing it shows.
- Forgetting the reason. "Click Reminders" is an instruction; "click Reminders because this is where a schedule lives" is understanding.
- Reading, not speaking. Write the way you talk.
Once you have a script you are happy with, see the product demo video feature for the recording setup and download ReScreen for macOS to record it.
